20 Ways to Make Money Online: Sparks to Fuel Your Fire

Stability is good. But if you want the flame to grow, it’s time to add more sparks.

Now comes the fun part: adding new fuel.

But let me be blunt: not every “make money online” idea is worth your time. Half the internet is just smoke and mirrors — usually from someone selling you a $997 “Passive Income Mastery Course” while bragging about their Lamborghini rental. Ignore that noise.

Here are 20 practical, real-world ways to make extra income online — the kind that can actually fuel your Phoenix fire instead of burning you out.

Low-Barrier Sparks (Start Today)

  1. Freelance Writing or Editing

If you can write, you can sell words. Start with Upwork or Fiverr.
(Bonus: I use writing to build The Fiscal Phoenix brand — it doubles as income and impact.

  2. Focus groups/ surveys
there are a number of companies in Australia that will pay you for your time to give them views on things such as politics, product, advertising, and general topics. most of these projects pay between 80 to $120 for an hour /hour and a half. Its realistic to get upto ten focus groups per year as companies don't like.to use the same person too often. As for surveys. there are many companies available that will pay you a small amount to complete online surveys. Doing this can add an extra $1000 a year.

  3.  Share  Trading
Online share trading can be lucrative and it does not require $5000 to get started (like it used to). These days you can invest as little as $10 with some platforms charging $1 or less to buy shares. With average returns higher than having your money in a savings account, this is a popular way to generate more income.

  4. Affiliate Marketing

Review products you actually use. My reviews arnt a gimmick — I tested fees, features, and transfer times myself. Transparency builds trust, and trust pays.

  5. Sell Digital Templates/Printables

Budget planners, savings trackers, affirmation cards. (Yes, The Fiscal Phoenix sells these.) this is a great way to use. Tried and tested, designs, to create passive income.

  6. Online Tutoring/coaching/consulting
Math, English, even IT basics. If you know it, someone will pay to learn it. If you have a skill, coach it. If you have experience, try consulting

  7. Virtual Assistant Work/Remote work

Emails, scheduling, social media. Businesses will happily pay to get their time back.

Mid-Level Sparks (More Work, Bigger Reward)

  1. Blogging with Monetisation

Start a blog. Ads, affiliates, digital products. The Fiscal Phoenix itself runs on this model. Be mindful that it takes time to build trust in an audience so commitment is a must.

  2. YouTube Channel or Podcast

You don’t need a studio — just consistency. A series in 5 Minutes could work wonders. this is particularly good for people who enjoy working with people and collaborating.

  3. Teach on Skillshare or Udemy

Turn your skills into a course. Budgeting, resilience, or even navigating financial crises.

  4. Social Media Micro-Business

Sell candles, crafts, or services. (Candles by Kelly is a great example.) success. While it can take time to build trust amongst your audience, it can pay off long term.

  5. Remote Customer Support

Plenty of companies hire for flexible, at-home support roles.

Creative Sparks (High Upside, Long-Term Growth)

  1. Self-Publish an eBook

Amazon Kindle Direct is free. Alternatively, you can also create your own website, publish it and market it from there.

  2. Dropshipping or Print-on-Demand

These are great avenues if you don't have a lot of money or space to start your own side business in the beginning. Keep in mind also that Print on Demand services can be a little bit more expensive. if you go down the drop shipping route be sure to order samples, before you commit to selling a product, as quality can vary greatly.

  3. Design Work (Canva, Adobe)

Logos, branding kits, or even affirmation card designs. Businesses everywhere regularly look for creative designers to create or give their products and content a second look over,

  4. Gaming Content / Streaming

Yes, it can pay. I’ve seen plenty of gamers build communities — and you know I’m a gamer myself. Just be mindful that this is a competitive field.

  5. Build Your Own App or Tool

if you ever have looked at your phone app store, it doesn't take long to figure out there are millions of apps. Many of these apps, including games, utilities and general purpose, can generate immense wealth. You can also use AI to assist with coding.

Investment Sparks (Put Money to Work)

  1. Dividend ETFs
Like VAS or VHY on the ASX. Not glamorous, but steady.
dividend. Etfs focus on providing you with periodic payments that provides steady income. You can buy them through sharetrading platforms such as superhero.

  2. Micro-Investing Apps
I use Raiz and Superhero. Even $5 a week stacks embers into something meaningful. You can choose to add more if you wish but regardless It can quickly add up to an extra $1000 you needed in a pinch.

  3. Peer-to-Peer Lending
Higher risk, but can yield results with smart diversification. Return rates are usually around %10. Good peer to peer lending companies will offer insurance to reduce risk and use a 'pool fund' to cover any defaults (eg marketlend). P2P involves using a platform that multiple people, will pull money together to loan to businesses or individuals.

  4. Buy & Flip Domain Names
Digital land — buy low, sell high. interestingly, people have been using realmaps to buy virtual property and it's proven to be quite lucrative.

  5. Rental Income from Digital Assets
Think: website ad space, e-books, or stock photos.
